Women of Wine Charities Hosts 2nd Annual Sangria Throwdown

The Event brings together popular Houston mixologists; proceeds benefit the Houston Area Women’s Center

HOUSTON, TEXAS – June 27, 2013 – On Monday, June 17, 2013

Women of Wine Charities (WOW), a not-for-profit organization comprised of women associated with the wine industry as well as other wine-loving women, hosted its 2nd Annual Sangria Throwdown event, this year held at El Meson restaurant. The event brought together popular sommeliers and mixologists who showcased their original sangria recipes and competed for the votes of WOW members and guests.
This year’s event featured five contestants, Sean Beck (Hugo’s, Backstreet Café), Adele Corrigan (13 Celsius), Laurie Sheddan (Philippe), Kelly Railean (Railean Distillers), and Alba Huerta (Clumsy Butcher, Julep Bar, Pastry War, Trigger Happy). It was a tight race, but Mr. Beck was declared the winner for his “Before the Make-Up” rosé Sangria.
Guests also enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres that included potato frittatas, bacon-wrapped dates, and summer vegetable skewers, courtesy of El Meson chef and owner, Peter Garcia.
As with all of WOW’s events, the Sangria Throwdown benefitted the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC)—a portion of the ticket sales will go to a year-end donation to HAWC. In addition, the event raised direct cash and in-kind donation to HAWC, including gift cards, t-shirts, flip-flops, and WOW’s signature Safe Night’s Sleep sponsorships.
